Gody na pustkowiu in short

A Mating in the Wilds is the story of two people thrown together by accident in the northern woods, and of the man who would prefer they never meet. Hubert Stane carries the memory of a prison term he says he did not earn. Helen Yardely carries a wish to do something real.

What Gody na pustkowiu is about

A man in a fringed deerskin suit paddles toward a Hudson Bay Company post, sees a flag on its pole, and almost turns back. Within the hour he meets a man he knew in England, a dapper figure who drops his monocle and goes white. Why does one man fear another so much?

A Mating in the Wilds is a northern adventure by Ottwell Binns, set in the Canadian fur country. It follows Hubert Stane, a discharged convict hiding in the bush, and Helen Yardely, a young Englishwoman touring the posts with her uncle. Between them stands Gerald Ainley, a rising man with a secret to guard. You get rapids, a forest fire, a raft, and a cabin in the snow.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy wilderness adventure, canoe journeys and winter survival will love this novel, especially those drawn to romance between capable people and to a man seeking vindication.

The story in 10 parts

A stranger in deerskin reaches Fort Malsun

The story opens on a wide northern river in summer. A lean young man in deerskin paddles toward Fort Malsun, a post built as a hollow square. His hair is streaked with gray, though his face is young. When he spots a flag over the post, he stops paddling and lets the current carry him back while he thinks.

He decides the flag only means a steamer is expected, and he camps beyond the post. Then he walks into the post and sees a young man in a monocle. The man looks at him calmly, then starts, and the monocle drops. The stranger is Hubert Stane, who served time in prison for forgery.

Stane knows the dapper man too. He is Gerald Ainley, an old friend from England. Ainley will not talk and promises to visit Stane's camp at midnight. Stane has a question he must put to him, and it matters desperately.

A man carrying a stain on his name can read every glance as a verdict.
