Mistrz fortelu in short

Captain Fred Flower is engaged to three women. One is the choice of his uncle, one is a pub landlady who knows him as Mr. Robinson, and one is Poppy Tyrell, whom he truly loves.

What Mistrz fortelu is about

What happens when a sea captain with a cheerful conscience gets engaged to three women at once? Captain Fred Flower of the schooner Foam has done exactly that, and the book opens with one of the three stepping onto his deck while he is out. His mate, Jack Fraser, is left to entertain her.

W. W. Jacobs wrote A Master of Craft as a comedy of the Thames waterfront. You get dark wharves at Wapping, a sleepy river town called Seabridge, a Chelsea pub called the Blue Posts, and a crew of sailors who see through everything. Nobody in the book is truly wicked, but the cost of each lie is real, and you feel it while you laugh.

Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you like comic plots built on tangled secrets, brisk dialogue, lively sailors and landladies, and warm-hearted humour about love and money.

The story in 7 parts

A pretty visitor arrives at the Foam

The story begins at a wharf in Wapping. A young woman stands on the jetty, looking down at the deck of a schooner. She asks a young man for Captain Flower and learns that the captain has gone ashore, dressed with great care. The man is Jack Fraser, the mate. She gives her name as Tyrell, and Fraser wonders why his master, a great admirer of women, has never mentioned her.

She agrees to wait aboard. She says her late father was a sailor. Fraser praises Flower as one of the finest fellows alive and tells how Flower once jumped overboard after him. She asks whether Fraser would do the same for her. He admits he is not much of a swimmer. Then he swears he would jump in even if he could not swim a stroke, in a gale, with the sea full of sharks.

Night falls, and they go down to the cabin and trade sea stories. Their laughter greets Flower when he hurries aboard at last. He has waited two hours for her at the Wheelers in Poplar. She says calmly that he never invited her, so she came without an invitation, and that she will come often. A shadow crosses his face.

Later the captain bursts back alone, breathless and wild eyed, and tells his mate that if anyone asks about the master of this ship, he is as unlike Flower as two people can be. In one evening Jacobs sets up the whole book. The captain is charming, the mate is smitten, and the girl is cleverer than both.

A plain deck can become a stage when someone clever steps onto it.
