A Doll's House: A Play in short

A Doll's House follows one household through the days around Christmas. Nora Helmer seems to be a carefree wife with a loving husband and a fine home. Beneath that, she has carried a secret debt for years, taken on to save Torvald's life.

What A Doll's House: A Play is about

A woman comes home on Christmas Eve with her arms full of parcels. She hums, hides a packet of macaroons, and wipes her mouth before her husband looks out. He calls her his little lark. Under the cheerful chatter there is a debt, and a secret that Nora Helmer has kept for eight years.

A Doll's House is a play in three acts by the Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen, published in 1879. It all happens in one room over about three days, in plain prose about money, work, illness and marriage. It asks what a wife owes her husband, and what she owes herself. You get the story scene by scene, up to the night before the final act, when the clock is running.

Dla kogo. For readers who love sharp family drama, plays that come alive when spoken aloud, stories about marriage and money, and anyone curious how one household can carry a whole society's rules.

A cheerful Christmas hides a quiet debt

The play opens in a sunny mood. Nora Helmer sweeps in from her shopping with parcels in her arms. She pays the porter a shilling and tells him to keep the change. She orders the maid to hide the Christmas tree from the children. Then she eats a macaroon in secret and listens at her husband's door. Torvald calls out and greets her with pet names, my little lark, my little squirrel, my little spendthrift.

Money is the first subject between them. Torvald is about to become manager of a bank, and Nora is delighted that this is the first Christmas without economizing. He reminds her that the salary will not come for a whole quarter. She says they can borrow until then. He calls her a featherhead and says a home built on debt has no freedom or beauty in it. Nora moves toward the stove and says as you wish.

Listen to how he speaks to her. When he asks what she would like, she asks for money, to hang in gold paper on the tree. He says she is just like her father, who could never hold on to money. She lies to him about the macaroons, and he wags his finger like a man joking with a child. Nora lets him.

A warm home can be held together by pet names, small lies and a debt nobody mentions.
