Over dit boek
What if the soul you set out to save exposes the desires you think you have conquered?
In the Egyptian desert, Paphnuce leads a community of monks beside the Nile. He believes God has chosen him to save Thais, the actress and courtesan Alexandria adores. He knows her from his worldly youth, and her memory will not leave him alone. Certain of his purpose, he leaves the desert for the city.
Alexandria greets him with theatres, philosophers and pleasure, a world divided between old gods and new faith. Thais fears age and death and wonders whether another life is possible. In Anatole France’s short, ironic novel, their meeting tests the distance between holiness and appetite—and the danger of knowing what is good for someone else.

A holy abbot cannot stop thinking of Thais
In the Thebaid, the desert of Upper Egypt, hermits live in huts along the Nile. They fast, wear hair shirts, and fight demons that come at night in lovely shapes. Paphnutius, Abbot of Antinoe, is the strictest of them all.
Born rich in Alexandria, he lived a loose life until a priest named Macrinus won him to Christ. One day, going over his old sins in prayer, he remembers an actress called Thais. Her face grows clear before him, first a temptress, then a woman weeping in pain. He feels pity, and he decides that he must save her soul.

What is Thais by Anatole France about?
It tells of Paphnutius, a monk in the Egyptian desert who goes to Alexandria to convert the actress and courtesan Thais. The story follows her new life and how the attempt to save her changes the monk himself.
Is Thais based on a true story or a legend?
It is a novel, drawn from old legends of desert saints and repentant courtesans, and set in fourth century Egypt. Anatole France wrote it in the late nineteenth century, adding wit, philosophy, and invented scenes to the traditional tale.
Who are Nicias and the other philosophers in Thais?
Nicias is Paphnutius's old fellow student, a cheerful sceptic who once loved Thais. At a banquet she attends, others speak for Stoic, pagan, and heretical Christian views, so the book becomes a lively contest of ideas.
