Over dit boek

What does courage look like when the talk of glory gives way to fear, wounded men, and waiting?

In Sevastopol, Leo Tolstoy takes you into a Russian naval port under siege during the Crimean War. These three sketches draw on what he sees as a young artillery officer. Sevastopol in December leads you from dawn over the bay into streets, a hospital, and fortified positions, where courage has little need for display.

Sevastopol in May turns to officers whose hunger for rank and approval follows them toward danger. Captain Mikhailov wants acceptance; Kalugin cares how others see him. Sevastopol in August follows the Kozeltsov brothers: weary Mikhail and newly posted Volodya, who longs to prove himself. Fear, pride, and small kindnesses bring the human cost of battle close.

A visitor walks from the wharf to the hospital

The first sketch is set in December 1854, and Tolstoy tells it in the second person, so you are the visitor. At dawn you cross the bay in a rowboat, pulled by an old sailor and a white-headed boy named Mishka. The guns grumble in the distance, and a dead brown horse lies in the mud beside your boat.

What is Sevastopol by Tolstoy about?

It is three linked sketches about the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War, set in December 1854, May 1855, and August 1855. They follow soldiers, officers, and a pair of brothers through hospitals, bastions, and the boulevard.

Is Sevastopol by Tolstoy a true story?

The setting and events come from the real siege, and Tolstoy served there as an artillery officer. The characters are invented, though drawn from what he saw. He wrote the sketches in 1855 while the siege was still going on.

Who is the hero of Sevastopol?

Tolstoy says in the second sketch that no one is the hero or the villain, since everyone is good and everyone is evil. He names the truth as his hero, and he presents the Russian soldiers as the true strength of the defense.
