Over dit boek
What do you owe your family when love, conscience and a divided country pull you apart?
In John Buchan’s John Burnet of Barns, a young Scottish laird faces the troubles of the seventeenth century. His estate lies among the hills of southern Scotland, but birth and home bring more than belonging. John Burnet is bound to family duties, family pride and the quarrels of his neighbours, in a country divided by faith and politics.
As danger tests his loyalties, John must weigh what he owes his friends, his family, his conscience and his country. Love adds another claim on his heart. Buchan sets these competing demands against the hills and rivers of the Tweed valley, bringing together the movement of adventure and the pull of a home his hero cannot simply leave behind.

What happens when a boy falls asleep on a branch above a Border river and wakes in the water, with a small girl in a white dress staring at him as if he were a river spirit? In John Burnet of Barns, that meeting in the wood of Dawyck in 1678 starts a friendship that carries a young laird through love, exile and a hunt across the southern hills.

A boy and a girl meet at the dragon's hole
In June 1678, John Burnet is not yet twelve. He slips away from his tutor, who drives Latin into him with a heavy hand, and heads for the shady pools of the wood of Dawyck.
He lands a fine trout from the branch of an old alder that leans over the Tweed. Then, lulled by the heat, he falls asleep. He wakes in seven feet of water and swims to the bank.

What is John Burnet of Barns about?
It follows a young Scottish laird in the 1680s, from a boyhood on the River Tweed through study in Glasgow and Leyden to a flight across the southern hills. His rivalry with a cousin and his love for Marjory Veitch drive the plot.
Who is Nicol Plenderleith?
Nicol is a lean, fast-running hillman who first appears bringing warning of a great flood at Peebles. He becomes John's servant and guide, and his wit, courage and knowledge of the moors help John again and again.
Is John Burnet of Barns a true story?
No, it is a historical novel by John Buchan, told as the memoir of an imagined laird. It is set against real conditions in seventeenth century Scotland, including the hunting of Covenanters, and several real people, such as Bishop Gilbert Burnet, are mentioned.
