Over dit boek
What happens when a shop learns to sell desire—and a young woman refuses to surrender her dignity?
Denise Baudu arrives in Paris with her younger brothers, Jean and Pépé, and needs work to feed them. Across from her uncle Baudu's struggling draper's shop stands Au Bonheur des Dames, a vast store that dazzles customers and threatens the small traders around it. Denise finds a place behind its counters, where low pay and harsh expectations test her stubborn resolve.
The store's charming owner, Octave Mouret, turns display, fashion and a sharp understanding of desire into power. In The Ladies' Paradise, Émile Zola brings silks, lace and crowded counters vividly into view. A patient love story unfolds within this restless business world, where progress creates opportunity for some while squeezing the livelihoods of others.

A country girl meets a shop that glows
Denise walks from the Saint-Lazare station with her brothers Jean, who is sixteen, and little Pépé, who is five. Their parents are dead, and their uncle Baudu once promised her a place in his house. At eight in the morning she turns into the Place Gaillon and stops short. A vast, bright draper's shop faces her, with a gilded entrance and the name The Ladies' Paradise.
Silks, satins and velvets shade from deep black to pale pink like a flower bed in bloom. Denise once sold cloaks in Valognes, but she has never seen cloth treated like theater.

What is The Ladies' Paradise about?
It follows Denise Baudu, a young woman from the provinces who finds work in a huge Paris department store run by Octave Mouret, while the small shops around it fail one after another.
Is The Ladies' Paradise based on a real store?
Zola studied the new Paris department stores of his day, especially the Bon Marché, and used what he saw to build an invented store. The characters and events are fiction, but the methods of selling are real.
When was The Ladies' Paradise written?
Zola published it in the early 1880s as one of the novels in his Rougon-Macquart cycle. The story itself is set in the 1860s, during the Second Empire, when Paris was being rebuilt.
