Over dit boek
Who makes the rules of a brotherhood—and what happens when its members disagree?
In The Principles of Masonic Law, Albert Gallatin Mackey examines how Freemasonry governs itself. Lodges and Grand Lodges face disputes over admission, authority, and discipline. His legal handbook seeks order in those disagreements, asking where Masonic law comes from, who may change it, and who must obey it.
Mackey moves from written and unwritten sources to the powers of Grand Lodges, local lodges, and their officers. He also considers the individual member: who may join, what belonging requires, and how offenses should be tried. At stake is the balance between a brotherhood's authority and its members' rights.

Masonic law is written, unwritten, and landmarked
Mackey begins by sorting the sources of authority. Like English law, Masonic law has an unwritten kind, which he calls ancient usage, and a written kind. The written kind includes the Old Charges, the 1663 regulations, and the thirty-nine General Regulations adopted in 1721.
After about 1769 the American Grand Lodges became independent of England. Each made law only for its own territory, so Mackey leans on the early documents as the shared base of the craft.
