책 소개
What if the people called lazy are living under a system that wears down their will to work?
In The Indolence of the Filipino, José Rizal confronts a charge made by Spanish writers and officials: Filipinos are lazy by nature. He does not simply reject it. Instead, he admits that idleness exists and asks what causes it—and who gains from the label.
This short essay moves from the meaning of indolence to the effects of climate and colonial rule. Rizal asks readers to distinguish sensible rest from sloth, then examines the forces that discourage work. His argument leads toward education, protection for workers and property, and an end to favoritism.

Who decides whether a people is lazy: the people themselves, or the system that rules them? That is the question José Rizal puts to his readers in The Indolence of the Filipino, an essay first printed in 1890.

Indolence is real but it is an effect
Rizal opens by answering a book that came before his. Dr. Sancianco had used facts supplied by the Spanish authorities to show that Filipino indolence does not exist at all. Rizal takes a different road. A bare denial, he says, cannot refute a real fact. After studying the scenes and people he has known since childhood, he says plainly that indolence does exist in the islands.
But he refuses to treat it as the cause of the country's misery. He sees it as the result. It grows out of a natural predisposition that bad government then feeds and magnifies. It is an indolence that snowballs. That one change in direction is the hinge of the whole essay.
