What can a woman choose freely when no one tells her what she needs to know?
Vivian Lane grows up in New England, where girls are taught to wait, be pleasant, and be chosen. Colorado offers her a different life, in a town where old customs hold less firmly. Several men take an interest in her, but new freedom brings a harder task: deciding what she wants from marriage, and what she owes herself.
In The Crux, Charlotte Perkins Gilman brings love into conflict with judgment. Morton Elder, the charming man Vivian already loves, stands at the center of her hardest choice. Through short scenes and long conversations, Gilman asks what happens when women are kept dependent and denied knowledge that could shape the rest of their lives.

Bainville talks and a girl listens
The story opens with three gossiping sisters hurrying down Margate Street in Bainville. They carry news of Morton Elder, a lively young man sent away from college after a night of drinking in the city. They bring the tale to the plain white house of Mr. Samuel Lane, and everyone talks at once, each adding a darker detail.
One person feels for him. Vivian Lane, the Lanes' daughter, sits in the back room with a book she is not reading. When a visitor asks about her plans, she says she longs to go to college and perhaps become a doctor for children. Her father calls it nonsense and says marriage is a woman's duty.

What is The Crux by Charlotte Perkins Gilman about?
It follows Vivian Lane, a young woman who leaves her narrow New England town for Colorado. There she finds work, friends and a returning childhood sweetheart, and she must weigh love against a hard truth about his health.
Who is Mrs. Pettigrew in The Crux?
She is Vivian's grandmother, a sharp, quiet woman of sixty who boards the train west without warning. She listens closely, speaks in dry one-word replies and quietly helps arrange good outcomes for the people she loves.
What does the title The Crux mean?
A crux is the central point on which a matter turns. Here it points to the moment Vivian must decide whether to marry, and to the larger question of what young women should be told about marriage.
