책 소개
Your surname may hide a medieval trade, a distant village, or a joke that outlives its teller.
In The Romance of Names, Ernest Weekley follows English first names and family names back to the ordinary lives behind them. A name begins as useful information: whose child someone is, where they come from, or what work they do. Weekley asks why people need more than one name, then explores how those simple labels become lasting family names.
Names do not stand still. Faith and fashion shape the names given at birth, while speech, time, and careless spelling alter the names families carry. Writing for ordinary readers, Weekley treats each surname as a small fossil of life in the Middle Ages. His examples and anecdotes reveal how people live, work, and joke—and invite you to look again at your own name.

Every surname belongs to one of four classes
Weekley begins with a simple claim. Look at any medieval list and you meet four kinds of men: John son of Simon, William of the Moor, Richard the Spicer and Robert the Long. A name comes from a father, from a place, from a trade or office, or from a nickname.
He tests the claim on a rugby team picked to play in January 1913. Seven of the fifteen names come from personal names, such as Hudson, Watson and Collins. Poulton, Lacey and Hall are place names, Cook is a trade, and Earl, Bull and Muddiman are nicknames.

What is The Romance of Names about?
It explains how English surnames arose, sorting them into names from fathers or mothers, places, trades and nicknames. Weekley uses medieval rolls, Chaucer and street directories to show how spelling and speech changed names over centuries.
Where does the surname Smith come from?
Smith is an occupational name. Weekley says it rose to the top of the lists because it was applied to workers in every metal, including blacksmiths, whitesmiths, bladesmiths and locksmiths, so many families could take it.
Is it true that most surnames have one clear meaning?
Weekley argues the opposite. Many names can be explained in two or more ways, as Bell, Ball and Rowe show, and old family legends that explain names with puns are usually later inventions without evidence behind them.
