William Shakespeare on time

William Shakespeare presented time as a pressure on human choices, not simply a measure of passing days. His plays showed how waiting could deepen doubt and danger, while trying to force the future could lead to destructive action. In Hamlet, thought and conscience complicated the moment of decision; in Macbeth, ambition turned a prediction into an urgent demand. Shakespeare offered no simple preference for speed or patience: both became dangerous when judgment failed.
Waiting involved a search for certainty
In Hamlet, the prince’s hesitation involved more than an unwillingness to act. The accusation came from a ghost whose reliability troubled him. He arranged a performance to test his uncle’s response, making the interval before action a period of investigation.
The future unsettled present success
In Macbeth, gaining the crown did not end the pressure of what might happen next. Macbeth remembered the prediction about Banquo’s children and feared that his own crimes would benefit another family. Achievement gave way to fresh anxiety and further violence.
Consequences outlasted the decisive moment
Macbeth’s first murder did not settle his future as he had hoped. It drew him into further crimes and growing insecurity. By the time Lady Macbeth died, his response was despair, a sharp contrast with his earlier eagerness to become king.
