Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in short

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland follows a bored girl who chases a White Rabbit down a hole and finds a world where nothing stays the same size, shape or sense. She shrinks and grows, swims in her own tears, and faces a Caterpillar who asks her who she is. She meets a Duchess with a pig for a baby, a Cheshire Cat that vanishes into its grin, and a Queen who orders beheadings the way others say hello.

What Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is about

What would you do if you saw a rabbit take a watch out of its waistcoat pocket? Alice, bored and sleepy on a riverbank, does not stop to think. She runs after the White Rabbit and jumps down his hole, into a place where size, time and good manners change without warning.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was written by Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Dodgson, a teacher of mathematics at Oxford, and was published in 1865.

Curiosity sends Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole

The story opens on a riverbank. Alice sits beside her sister, bored, because her sister's book has no pictures or conversations in it. Then a White Rabbit with pink eyes hurries past, muttering that he will be late.

A talking rabbit does not shock her. A rabbit with a waistcoat pocket and a watch does. Burning with curiosity, Alice follows him into a large hole under the hedge, without once asking how she will get out again.

The fall is strange. The well is lined with cupboards, bookshelves and maps, and Alice lifts a jar labeled orange marmalade, only to find it empty. She lands unhurt and finds a little door only fifteen inches high. Beyond it lies the loveliest garden she has ever seen, but she is far too big to get through.

Then come the bottle and the cake. Alice drinks and shrinks to ten inches tall, and only then remembers that she left the key on the table above her reach. Every cure in Wonderland comes with a new problem.

Curiosity opens the door to Wonderland, and Alice walks through it before she has any plan.

  • The White Rabbit A fretful rabbit in a waistcoat who is always late, fears the Duchess and the Queen, and keeps losing his gloves and fan.
  • The Caterpillar A blue caterpillar on a mushroom who smokes a hookah, contradicts Alice, and asks her who she is.
  • The Cheshire Cat A grinning cat who appears and vanishes at will, calls everyone mad, and gives Alice puzzling but friendly directions.
  • The Hatter A riddling tea-drinker whose watch tells the day of the month and whose quarrel with Time leaves it always six o'clock.
  • The March Hare The Hatter's companion at the endless tea party, who offers wine that is not there and insists on saying exactly what he means.
  • The Queen of Hearts A furious card-pack ruler who answers every problem by ordering a beheading and wants her croquet game won her way.
  • The Duchess A bad-tempered noblewoman who nurses a baby in a peppery kitchen and later cannot stop finding morals in everything.

How it ends (spoiler)

Alice grows to her full size in the courtroom, tells the Queen that she is nothing but a pack of cards, and the whole pack flies at her. She wakes on the riverbank with her head in her sister's lap, while her sister brushes away dead leaves. She tells her sister about the strange adventure, then runs in to tea. Her sister stays and imagines Wonderland herself, picturing Alice grown up and telling the tale to children.
