Che cos’è questo libro
Noble Game is a Swedish novel by Elisabeth Kuylenstierna-Wenster, who died in 1933. It follows Gunvor Eiden, the orphaned heiress of a rich merchant house in a Halland coastal town, from her eighteenth year to old age. The setting is Skåne in the later nineteenth century, among old estates, entails and noble names that need new money to survive.
The book asks what a woman owes to duty and what she owes to herself. Gunvor is raised to obey, and she believes that happiness is waiting for her. A plan made long before she understands it sends her to a crumbling castle called Bragehall. From there the story moves through a marriage, a country neighborhood full of whispers, a bright and risky love, and the cost of choosing freedom.
You meet a stern grandmother with a fifty-year secret, a sleepy young count, a charming wanderer, and a castle with a sealed room and a legend of a gray man. You also hear the voices of servants, who often see more than their masters do. The first key point begins on a gloomy autumn evening, in a carriage heading toward the old castle.

A girl is taken to Bragehall
The story opens in a train and then a carriage, on an October evening. Eighteen-year-old Gunvor Eiden travels with her grandmother, Mrs. Eiden, to the old castle of Bragehall in Skåne. Gunvor is afraid of the castle and of the dying old count who lives there. Her grandmother tells her the reason for the trip. The count and she hope Gunvor will marry the count's grandson, young Haqvin Brage.
We learn who Gunvor is. She is the rich orphan of a merchant family whose founder came from Savoy selling plaster figures. Her father was nicknamed the Gold King, and he died of grief after losing his English wife. Gunvor has grown up under her grandmother's strict eye, with a hunger for joy that she cannot name.
Her grandmother tells her that the best marriages rest on respect and affection, and that great passion scorches those who sit too close. Gunvor believes her completely. At the station they meet Haqvin, who looks handsome and gentle to her. She imagines him as a knight from a story.
At the castle gate she reads the family motto, which means act and hope for nothing. It makes her shudder. Inside, the old servant tells her of a sealed room and a gray man said to haunt it, while Karna tries to hush her. Gunvor's curiosity is lit.
The chapter ends with her alone in a silent room. She imagines letting sunlight and laughter into every hall of the house.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
