Sažetak djela My Ántonia, Chapter 17

Chapter 17 od 45 · Book 1: The Shimerdas · 7 min za čitanje poglavlja

In Chapter 17, Jim visits the Shimerdas in spring and finds Ántonia absorbed in farm work, unwilling to attend school despite her interest in learning. Her pride in her strength, exhaustion, and grief for her father reveal the costs of her responsibilities, while Jim feels increasingly distant from her.

Što se događa

  1. Spring brings pasture fires, and the Shimerdas begin farming from a new house built with neighbors’ help.
  2. Jim visits Yulka and Mrs. Shimerda, who questions him about Grandfather’s planting plans.
  3. Ántonia returns from plowing and rejects an invitation to school because she needs to help establish the farm.
  4. Ántonia cries, asks Jim to share his learning, and seeks his promise to remember her father.
  5. At supper, sibling competition and complaints about Grandfather make Jim uncomfortable.
  6. Jim describes Ántonia’s constant labor and feels that her growing responsibilities leave little room for their friendship.

Na što obratiti pozornost

Ántonia’s refusal makes the conflict between schooling and farm labor explicit. Her tears and request for Jim’s knowledge show that this choice does not erase her interest in learning.
