Sažetak djela Jane Eyre (Chapter 35)

Chapter 35 od 38 · 18 min čitanja: chapter

In Chapter 35, Jane refuses St. John’s loveless marriage proposal, but his prayers and gentle appeals nearly persuade her to accept it as a religious duty. Hearing what she recognizes as Edward Fairfax Rochester’s voice calling her name breaks his influence, and she withdraws to pray and form a resolve.

Što se događa

  1. St. John delays his departure for a week and treats Jane with cold politeness while showing greater warmth toward his sisters.
  2. Jane seeks reconciliation, refuses marriage again, and insists that she must discover what has become of Mr. Rochester.
  3. Diana learns why St. John proposes and urges Jane against joining his work in India.
  4. St. John’s Bible reading, prayer, and gentle persuasion bring Jane close to accepting marriage if she can know God requires it.
  5. Jane hears Rochester’s voice calling her, searches outside, and orders St. John to leave her alone.
  6. Jane locks herself in her room, prays with gratitude, and makes an unspecified resolve while awaiting daylight.

Na što obratiti pozornost

Jane makes love a condition of marriage rather than accepting usefulness as sufficient. This explains her resistance to St. John despite her respect for his abilities and aims.
