Sažetak djela Jane Eyre (Chapter 34)

Chapter 34 od 38 · 38 min čitanja: chapter

In Chapter 34, Jane prepares a joyful family homecoming, but St. John gradually directs her studies and presses her to accompany him to India as his wife. Still distressed by the absence of news about Mr. Rochester, she accepts missionary work only without marriage, resisting St. John’s claim that refusing him means refusing God.

Što se događa

  1. Jane leaves regular school teaching and prepares Moor House with Hannah for Diana and Mary’s Christmas return.
  2. St. John avoids domestic festivities, serves his parish, and announces Rosamond Oliver’s engagement and his own approaching departure.
  3. He makes Jane replace German with Hindostanee, and his approval increasingly restricts her speech, behavior, and studies.
  4. Unanswered letters seeking news of Mr. Rochester deepen Jane’s anxiety, and a disappointing business letter brings her to tears.
  5. During a walk, St. John asks Jane to marry him and join his missionary work in India.
  6. Jane offers to accompany him without marriage; he rejects this condition, demands further consideration, and treats her coldly.
