Who Eveline is
Eveline appears in the group of Dubliners stories about young people on the edge of adult life. She keeps house for her harsh father and lives with a heavy sense of family duty. Sitting at her window, she thinks about the familiar life around her and the possibility of leaving it.
What Eveline wants
Frank offers Eveline a different life, with marriage and a journey to Buenos Ayres. That possibility stands against the responsibilities she already carries and the promises she once made to her dying mother. Her story holds attention through this quiet tension between escape and duty, rather than through loud events.
Eveline and the others in the story
Her father, her mother and Frank each have a place in the choice she considers. Her father's harshness belongs to the home she knows, while her mother's memory carries the weight of promises. Frank is the sailor who offers to take her away from that familiar life.
