Havelock Ellis

Sobre Havelock Ellis

Havelock Ellis (1859-1939) was an English physician, writer, and social reformer, a pioneer in the scientific study of human sexuality and psychology. A serious and humane scholar, he helped establish sexology as a field of study and argued, controversially for his time, for a more open, tolerant, and understanding attitude toward human nature. His major work, the multi-volume Studies in the Psychology of Sex, was among the first systematic, scientific examinations of human sexuality, treating with unusual candour and compassion subjects that Victorian society preferred to ignore. Ellis also wrote widely on literature, society, and psychology, and was a thoughtful essayist. A leading progressive intellectual, Ellis approached difficult and taboo subjects as a scientist and reformer, and his work influenced modern psychology and social attitudes. His writing is of historical and scholarly interest.
