Uma tradução palavra por palavra com gramática simples, boa para nomes, lemas e saudações; uma tradução completa de trechos longos exige um especialista. A letra þ (thorn) representa o th de thing, e uma barra sobre uma vogal, como em hāl ou frēond, indica uma vogal longa.

What is Old English?

Old English is the language of England before about 1100, the language of Beowulf and of King Alfred. It is a different language from Shakespeare's English, which is where thou and thee come from. For thee and thou, try the Shakespeare translator.

How does the Old English translator work?

It looks each word up in a list of about 3,400 common words, gives nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs their old endings, and keeps the words it does not know as you typed them, so names stay as they are. It runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How accurate is it?

It is a word-by-word guide with simple grammar, good for names, mottos and greetings. Old English has many word forms and a free word order, so a long passage needs a scholar.

What do the letters þ and ā mean?

The letter þ (thorn) stands for the th of thing or this. A bar over a vowel, as in hāl or frēond, marks a long vowel.

Can I use it for a tattoo or an engraving?

Treat the result as a starting point and show it to someone who reads Old English before you make it permanent. Names and short mottos work best.

Is it free?

Yes. It is free to use as often as you like, with no sign-up.
