Wuthering Heights, Chapter 13 — streszczenie

Chapter 13 z 34 · 18 min czytania rozdziału

In Chapter 13, Catherine begins recovering under Edgar’s care, while Isabella’s letter reveals the misery of her marriage and her reception at Wuthering Heights. The hope surrounding Catherine’s pregnancy contrasts with Isabella’s isolation, as Heathcliff threatens to punish her for Edgar’s supposed responsibility for Catherine’s illness.

Co się wydarza

  1. Edgar nurses Catherine through her illness, and she gradually gains strength, though her sadness remains.
  2. Catherine moves downstairs, and the household hopes her pregnancy brings Edgar an heir.
  3. Isabella announces her marriage, then sends Ellen a letter describing her arrival at Wuthering Heights.
  4. Hareton threatens Isabella with a dog, Joseph refuses assistance, and Mr. Earnshaw reveals his desire to kill Heathcliff.
  5. After quarrels over food and sleeping arrangements, Isabella breaks her dishes, cleans the mess, and finds shelter in Hareton’s room.
  6. Heathcliff rejects Isabella’s claim to share his room and threatens her as a substitute target for Edgar.

Na co zwrócić uwagę

Isabella’s closing declaration makes her rejection of Heathcliff explicit. It turns her account of household discomfort into a direct admission of marital misery.

Krótki sprawdzian

Why does Heathcliff threaten to make Isabella suffer?
