Who Song Jiang is
Song Jiang becomes a central figure in the outlaw brotherhood gathering at Liangshan Marsh in Song-dynasty China. His generosity helps bind together fighters, former officials, and people with grudges against the established order.
The stronghold shelters fugitives whose separate adventures bring them into a shared life outside the law. Around Song Jiang, this gathering becomes an organized force capable of challenging imperial troops.
What Song Jiang wants
Song Jiang continues to value loyalty to the emperor despite the corruption that drives people into outlaw life. He distinguishes the ruler from the corrupt servants around him, a distinction that shapes his position within the brotherhood.
Song Jiang and the others in the story
Song Jiang's companions do not all share his willingness to trust the government or its promises. Their disagreement raises a question about whether the brotherhood should remain outside the state or seek a place within it.
Li Kui is fiercely devoted to Song Jiang, but his recklessness and violence make that loyalty dangerous. Such ties place generosity and devotion beside the troubling force of violence within the brotherhood.
