Vanity Fair, Chapter 3 — streszczenie

Chapter 3 z 68 · chapter — czas czytania: 12 min

In Chapter 3, Rebecca Sharp sets out to attract Joseph Sedley, Amelia's wealthy, vain, and painfully shy brother, using praise and an eager interest in India. She hides her anger when dinner becomes embarrassing, but although Joseph feels flattered and thinks about her, he leaves rather than join the women upstairs.

Co się wydarza

  1. Rebecca meets Joseph, praises his looks within his hearing, and watches his embarrassment increase under his father's teasing.
  2. The narrator explains Rebecca's need for a husband and describes Joseph's profitable employment, lonely habits, vanity, and fear of women.
  3. At dinner, Rebecca pretends enthusiasm for Indian food, but curry and a chili force her to ask for water.
  4. Rebecca answers the family's laughter with a joke, concealing her anger and winning Mr. Sedley's approval.
  5. Mr. Sedley warns Joseph about Rebecca's intentions, and Joseph responds with a flattering story about another woman's pursuit.
  6. Joseph thinks warmly about Rebecca but quietly leaves for theatrical entertainment instead of going upstairs.

Na co zwrócić uwagę

Rebecca Sharp’s private instruction makes her behavior deliberate rather than spontaneous. She chooses a manner and subject designed to appeal to Joseph.

Krótki sprawdzian
