Who Aramis is
Aramis appears in The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, written with his collaborator Auguste Maquet. He is neat and elegant, with a sly manner that gives his dialogue a distinct voice.
Like Athos and Porthos, he uses a name that is not his birth name. His secrecy extends to his love affairs, and a lady's handkerchief helps introduce him to d'Artagnan.
What Aramis wants
Aramis dreams of the church, yet he also pursues love affairs and takes part in plots. His religious hopes sit alongside his life as a soldier and his loyalty to his friends.
Aramis and the others in the story
His friendship with d'Artagnan begins with an insult rather than an easy welcome. When d'Artagnan mocks a dropped handkerchief without knowing it belongs to a lady, Aramis agrees to a duel.
The arrival of the Cardinal's guards changes the quarrel, and d'Artagnan sides with the three Musketeers. Aramis later joins his friends on the journey to England to recover the queen's diamond studs.
