In Chapter 19, Pearl refuses to approach Hester Prynne until her mother puts the scarlet letter back on and covers her hair, interrupting the adults' hopeful reunion. Although Pearl then embraces Hester, she resists Arthur Dimmesdale, asks whether he can accompany them publicly, and washes his kiss from her forehead.
