Who Samuel Pickwick is
Samuel Pickwick is a kind, round man who believes the best of the people he meets. Bald and bespectacled, he wears gaiters and a round waistcoat, giving him a distinctive appearance.
His London club gives his curiosity a purpose, sending him and three companions out to study people's habits. Their coach journeys bring him into inns, country houses and public gatherings, where observation soon becomes personal involvement.
What Samuel Pickwick wants
Pickwick wants to understand human nature and report what he discovers to the club. Yet his interest in people is more than a wish to collect curious stories.
When he believes someone has done wrong, he pursues justice even when it makes him look foolish. A misunderstanding with his landlady, Mrs Bardell, threatens a lawsuit and tests his refusal to accept a false claim.
Samuel Pickwick and the others in the story
Sam Weller becomes Pickwick's personal servant after they meet at the White Hart inn in Southwark. Sam recognises his master's goodness and brings practical knowledge of the world to their partnership.
Alfred Jingle, a strolling actor and trickster, takes advantage of the trust Pickwick offers so readily. Together, these relationships reveal the difference between Pickwick's innocence and the sharper judgement of those around him.
