The Monk, Chapter 9 — streszczenie

Chapter 9 z 12 · 50 min czytania rozdziału

In Chapter 9, Ambrosio loses much of his remorse while Antonia mourns Elvira and fails to secure protection from her relatives. A figure resembling her mother warns of a meeting in three days, and Jacintha's frightened appeal to Ambrosio offers him a possible opening.

Co się wydarza

  1. Matilda excuses Elvira's murder and renews Ambrosio's desire for Antonia, but he refuses a compact with infernal powers.
  2. Antonia discovers Elvira's body, and her mother's death passes as natural; Jacintha pays for the burial.
  3. Antonia's appeal to the seriously ill Marquis fails, while Leonella's letter promises a return that does not occur on Tuesday night.
  4. Waiting for Leonella, Antonia reads a ballad about a broken marriage promise and a ghost who claims his bride.
  5. A shrouded figure reveals Elvira's face and announces another meeting in three days; Antonia collapses.
  6. Jacintha seeks Ambrosio's help against the ghost, and Matilda urges him to hear her because she houses Antonia.
