Who Edward Malone is
Edward Malone works for the Daily Gazette and tells the story through his own observations and reports. He is cheerful, athletic and eager, but he is neither a trained explorer nor a scientist. His sharp eye for detail helps him describe unfamiliar places, while his honesty makes room for fear as well as wonder.
What Edward Malone wants
Malone wants to win the love of Gladys Hungerton, who admires men willing to face danger. After she rejects his proposal, he asks his editor, Mr McArdle, for a dangerous assignment. That request brings him to Professor George Edward Challenger, whose claims about surviving prehistoric animals lead to an expedition.
How Edward Malone changes
At first, Malone sees adventure as a way to prove that he deserves Gladys's love. On the plateau, he shows courage and good judgment, and his companions begin to respect him as a colleague. The journey begins to matter beyond her approval, as he learns to value practical bravery, shared work and friendship.
