Who George Wickham is
George Wickham arrives in Meryton as a handsome, easy and charming young militia officer. He soon tells Elizabeth Bennet a private story about his dealings with Darcy.

What George Wickham wants
His interest in money places him among characters whose marriage choices are shaped by financial security.
George Wickham and the others in the story
Elizabeth believes Wickham quickly because his story fits what she already thinks about Darcy. She does not stop to question why a new acquaintance shares such a personal accusation so soon.
Darcy later offers his own account of their dealings in a letter to Elizabeth. The competing accounts challenge her confidence in her ability to judge people by their manner.
