Who Nancy is
Nancy works as a maid for Miss Polly Harrington in Beldingsville, Vermont. She comes from a large, poor family and speaks plainly, with a loyalty that makes her an ally to Pollyanna.
At first, Nancy is afraid of Miss Polly, whose strict habits shape life throughout the house. Her position lets readers see the household through the eyes of its servants, rather than only its mistress.
Nancy and the others in the story
Nancy shows Pollyanna to the bare attic room and feels ashamed of what the child has been given. She expects hurt, but Pollyanna admires the view and finds a reason to welcome the missing mirror.
The girl's response astonishes Nancy, who soon becomes one of her first friends. While Miss Polly keeps her feelings guarded, Nancy offers Pollyanna warmth and remains a loyal helper.
How Nancy changes
Pollyanna explains the glad game to Nancy, describing the habit her father teaches her. The game means looking for something true to be glad about, even when a situation seems unhappy.
Nancy is puzzled at first, then charmed, and begins playing without meaning to. Her response shows how Pollyanna's way of looking at life passes from one person to another.
