Ragnarok
Ragnarok is the foretold destruction of the gods and their world in Norse myth. In the most common version, a terrible winter leads to a final battle, fire and flood, but a renewed earth follows. It matters as a story of courage, loss and new beginnings.
Key stories of Ragnarok
The terrible winter
A long winter comes without summer between its seasons. Human bonds break down, and violence spreads as the final disaster approaches.
In The Prose Edda, a questioner learns that bitter winters and fighting within families will signal the approach of Ragnarok.

The final battle
The gods face giants and monsters, and many enemies kill each other. Odin falls to the wolf Fenrir, while Thor kills the world serpent but dies from its poison.
In The Prose Edda, Heimdall sounds his horn to summon the gods, and Odin rides into battle against Fenrir.

The world returns
Fire consumes the world, and the earth sinks beneath the sea. Afterwards, a green earth rises again, with surviving gods and a human pair to continue life.
In The Prose Edda, the account turns from destruction to fields that grow without sowing and two human survivors sheltered through the disaster.

Does Ragnarok mean the end of everything?
No, Ragnarok brings destruction but also renewal in the most common version. Many gods die, yet others survive or return, the earth becomes green again, and a human pair carries life forward.
Is Ragnarok the same as the Christian Last Judgment?
No, Ragnarok is a Norse story of cosmic destruction and renewal, not a judgment of all humanity. Both traditions describe an ending and a world beyond it, but their gods, events and religious meanings differ.
