Who Will Ladislaw is
Will Ladislaw is a young man whose warmth and restless energy contrast with his scholarly cousin, Edward Casaubon. When Dorothea meets him again in Rome, he is traveling to study art.
He talks to Dorothea as an equal, offering a different kind of company from her distant husband. He also tells her that Casaubon's scholarship ignores German research, a criticism that hurts her but stays in her mind.
What Will Ladislaw wants
Will searches for a worthy path, though at first he has no clear plan for his life. His charm and artistic interests have not yet given him a settled purpose.
Work begins to offer him direction when he runs a newspaper bought by Dorothea's uncle, Mr Brooke. The role suits his talents and gives him a place in public life, even as gossip follows him.
Will Ladislaw and the others in the story
Casaubon gives Will a small allowance, but their family connection does not prevent uneasiness between them. When Will visits near Lowick, his conversations make Dorothea laugh and offer a freshness she has missed.
Dorothea thinks of Will with a sister's frankness, and nothing improper happens between them. Casaubon nevertheless responds with jealousy, cold remarks and restrictions, revealing how differently the three understand their ties.
