Søren Kierkegaard on anxiety

Søren Kierkegaard regarded anxiety as one of the serious concerns of concrete human life. He gave it a place alongside his reflections on choice, commitment and despair, rather than treating human existence as something an abstract system could fully explain. His broader concern was how a particular person actually lived. He insisted that understanding ideas was not enough: truth had to shape a life, and personal responsibility could not be handed over to the crowd.
The crowd could conceal responsibility
Kierkegaard distrusted the comfort of agreement because it could allow a person to stop thinking independently. His emphasis on the single individual placed the burden of answering for a life on that person, rather than on the surrounding crowd.
Faith offered no public proof
In Fear and Trembling, Kierkegaard approached faith through Abraham, whose trust could not be explained by a rule everyone could verify. Religious commitment involved risk, rather than the kind of certainty that could be demonstrated equally to everyone.
Despair concerned losing the self
His treatment of despair addressed a distinct concern. In The Sickness unto Death, the self had to hold limitation and possibility together. Despair involved losing that self, while faith concerned its relationship to the power that made it.
