Who David Balfour is
David Balfour is a young Scot who seeks help from his uncle Ebenezer after losing his father. He expects family support, but the neglected House of Shaws and Ebenezer's evasions give him reasons for suspicion. When his uncle arranges a visit to the Covenant, David is seized and carried out to sea.
What David Balfour wants
David wants safety and the means to claim the inheritance that belongs to him. Threatened with being sold into servitude in America, he must first struggle to keep control of his own life. Among rough sailors and later in the Highlands, he learns to weigh danger and decide whom to trust.
David Balfour and the others in the story
David becomes Alan Breck Stewart's ally when the ship's officers threaten the proud Highlander. Their shared danger begins a friendship despite differences in politics, upbringing, and habits. Alan offers guidance and protection, but his pride and quick temper also strain their partnership.
For David, loyalty becomes a responsibility that reaches beyond his own need for safety. His quarrels with Alan test his judgment alongside the hunger, exhaustion, and threat of capture they face.
