Homer, Chapter 20 — streszczenie

Chapter 20 z 26 · chapter — czas czytania: 7 min

In Chapter 20, Ulysses wins the bow contest, reveals himself, and joins Telemachus and two loyal servants in killing the suitors with Minerva’s help. His punishment also reaches disloyal servants, while his warning against celebrating the dead presents the slaughter as divine judgment rather than an occasion for boasting.

Co się wydarza

  1. During Apollo’s festival, the suitors mock Theoclymenus when he describes visions of their approaching deaths.
  2. The queen offers marriage to whoever can string Ulysses’ bow and shoot through twelve axe heads.
  3. Telemachus stops trying at his father’s signal, the suitors fail, and Ulysses completes the test while seated.
  4. Ulysses kills Antinous, announces his identity, and refuses Eurymachus’s offer of compensation.
  5. With Telemachus, two loyal servants, and Minerva’s help, Ulysses kills the suitors despite their access to some weapons.
  6. Ulysses orders brutal punishments for disloyal servants and stops Eurycleia from celebrating over the bodies.

Na co zwrócić uwagę

Ulysses restrains Eurycleia’s triumph. The warning frames the deaths as punishment for wrongdoing, not a reason for joyful boasting.

Krótki sprawdzian

Why can the suitors not immediately take weapons from the hall walls?
