Who Mr Duffy is
Mr Duffy lives a carefully ordered, solitary life and works as a bank cashier. His story, A Painful Case, belongs to the part of Dubliners concerned with adult lives. The collection explores how habit can hold people in place, and his strict routine gives that theme a personal shape.
Mr Duffy and the others in the story
Mr Duffy meets Mrs Sinico at a concert, and they develop a friendship through talk and shared books. Her presence disturbs the solitary routine that has kept his life so carefully arranged. Their connection brings companionship into a story whose central figure is accustomed to living apart from others.
