Dead Souls, Part 2, Chapter 3 — streszczenie
Part 2, Chapter 3 z 16 · chapter — czas czytania: 54 min
In Chapter 3, Chichikov mistakenly reaches Peter Petrovitch Pietukh’s estate, where lavish hospitality interrupts his journey and he persuades the bored Platon Mikhalitch to travel with him. Hoping to reduce his own expenses, Chichikov accompanies Platon to his sister’s home, where Constantine Thedorovitch Kostanzhoglo’s productive estate offers a striking contrast to Pietukh’s extravagance.
Co się wydarza
- Seeking Colonel Koshkarev, Chichikov instead meets Pietukh, who supervises fishing and welcomes him to dinner.
- Pietukh admits that his entire estate is mortgaged, while his sons express their preference for city life.
- At dinner, Pietukh presses excessive food on his guests, while Platon describes boredom despite his wealth and comfortable circumstances.
- Chichikov proposes traveling together to reduce his own costs; Pietukh prevents their immediate departure and entertains them overnight.
- The next morning, Chichikov and Platon leave together and visit the prosperous estate of Platon’s brother-in-law, Kostanzhoglo.
- Platon’s sister explains her practical household work, and Kostanzhoglo arrives discussing a loan to help peasants purchase their freedom.

Na co zwrócić uwagę
Platon treats even trouble as preferable to boredom. This dissatisfaction makes Chichikov’s invitation attractive despite Platon’s secure circumstances.
Krótki sprawdzian
Why can Chichikov not leave Pietukh’s house immediately after arranging to travel with Platon?
