David Copperfield, Chapter 7 — streszczenie

Chapter 7 z 64 · chapter — czas czytania: 29 min

In Chapter 7, David endures Mr. Creakle’s beatings at Salem House and gains James Steerforth’s favor by retelling stories, but his disclosures help Steerforth humiliate Mr. Mell and cause his dismissal. A visit from Mr. Peggotty and Ham brings comfort, while David’s admiration for Steerforth persists despite his guilt, and the half-year ends with his journey home.

Co się wydarza

  1. Mr. Creakle begins the half-year with threats and beatings, keeping David and most other boys constantly afraid.
  2. David strengthens his friendship with Steerforth through bedtime storytelling, receiving protection, help with lessons, and carefully rationed wine.
  3. Steerforth exposes Mr. Mell’s mother’s dependence on charity, and Mr. Creakle dismisses the teacher while David feels responsible.
  4. Traddles protests Mr. Mell’s treatment, but the other boys accept Steerforth’s claim that he acts for their benefit.
  5. Mr. Peggotty and Ham visit with family news and shellfish, and Steerforth charms them both.
  6. After more punishment and growing anticipation of the holidays, David leaves school in the Yarmouth mail coach.

Na co zwrócić uwagę

Traddles directly names the harm Steerforth causes. His protest contrasts with David’s divided feelings and the other boys’ praise.

Krótki sprawdzian

Why does Steerforth reserve the cowslip wine for David?
