Daniel Deronda, Chapter 66 — streszczenie

Co się wydarza

1. Lapidoth gambles away Mirah’s thirty shillings and returns to her home with the empty purse.
2. Ezra insists on receiving his father upstairs, where Lapidoth falsely claims that necessary expenses consume the money.
3. After sending Mirah out, Ezra promises his father basic support but condemns his wrongdoing and refuses him trust.
4. Lapidoth weeps, and Mirah returns to find Ezra trembling from the confrontation.
5. When Lapidoth threatens to leave and die, Mirah secures his agreement to stay and gives him a room.
6. During the night, Lapidoth thinks about Mirah’s money and past gambling more powerfully than Ezra’s rebuke.

Na co zwrócić uwagę

Ezra makes family responsibility independent of his father’s conduct. His offer of shelter does not erase his judgment or restore trust.
