What Dunya wants
Dunya agrees to marry Luzhin, although Raskolnikov understands that she does not want the marriage. She is ready to accept a hard future partly to help her brother. Luzhin values gratitude and social standing more than affection, making the engagement a troubling bargain.
Dunya and the others in the story
Dunya travels to the capital with her mother, Pulcheria Alexandrovna, full of love and anxiety for Raskolnikov. They find him ill and distant, unwilling to accept the closeness they offer. He tells Dunya not to marry Luzhin, but refuses to explain himself.
Raskolnikov sees her proposed marriage as a sacrifice and compares her situation with Sonya's. His concern for his sister exists alongside a coldness that pushes his family away.
