Who the Beast is
The Beast lives in an enchanted castle, where Beauty's father finds shelter after becoming lost in a snowstorm. When the merchant picks a rose from the garden, the Beast angrily accuses him of repaying hospitality with theft. He demands the merchant's life unless one of his daughters freely comes to take his place.
What the Beast wants
The Beast longs for Beauty's company and wants her to agree to marry him. He dines with her every evening, speaks honestly, and admits that he is not clever. Although she refuses his repeated proposals, he continues to treat her gently.
The Beast and the others in the story
Beauty arrives expecting to be eaten, but finds a room with books, music and a mirror showing her home. As they spend time together, she grows accustomed to the Beast and begins to look forward to his company. His appearance still troubles her, and he knows that she cannot yet look beyond it.
The Beast's kindness contrasts with the pride and spite of Beauty's handsome elder sisters. Through that contrast, the tale asks readers to value actions and character rather than a pleasing face.
