Who Lady Lyndon is
Lady Lyndon is a wealthy married woman whose position attracts Redmond Barry's attention. In a story shaped by his hunger for rank, she represents access to property and aristocratic standing.
Lady Lyndon and the others in the story
Barry pursues Lady Lyndon with determination, seeing marriage as an entrance into the life he believes he deserves. His interest in her brings his ambitions into the setting of an aristocratic household. The distinction matters because gaining access does not itself secure respect, affection, or lasting security.
Lady Lyndon's son, Lord Bullingdon, resists Barry's authority and his treatment of the family. This resistance sets Barry's claims to importance beside the relationships affected by his conduct.
