Who Captain Jim is
Captain Jim tends the lighthouse at Four Winds Point, guiding ships past the rocks. He has spent much of his life at sea, and his tales draw on sailing and coastal lore. Some stories are funny and others sad, carrying thoughts about love, loss and courage.
What Captain Jim wants
Captain Jim longs to see his life story take the shape of a book. He has written it down in his own way, and Anne recognises how much this wish matters to him.
Captain Jim and the others in the story
Anne takes to Captain Jim at once because she recognises someone who shares her sense of wonder. She and Gilbert visit the lighthouse often, sitting with him while he tells his stories.
His friendship reaches beyond the young couple, as neighbours turn to him when they need help. He carries a private sorrow, but his experience of loss does not make him cold toward others.
