Who Richard Grey is
Richard Grey is a country clergyman in the north of England, and the father of Agnes and Mary. His household is loving and comfortable, though the family is never rich.
Hoping to increase the family's fortune, he puts his money into a merchant's venture. When the venture is lost at sea, the family is left with very little. This loss prompts Agnes to seek paid work and prove that she can be useful.
Richard Grey and the others in the story
His wife, Alice Grey, comes from a wealthier family and marries him against her relatives' wishes. When hardship comes, she chooses to face poverty with him rather than accept help that would divide them.
Richard cherishes his daughters, who grow up at home with their mother as their teacher. Agnes's plan to leave this sheltered home and become a governess initially meets with family doubt.
