Who Lavinia Herbert is
Lavinia Herbert attends the London boarding school where Sara Crewe arrives as a wealthy, much loved child. She is a spiteful, jealous older pupil who dislikes the popularity Sara enjoys among the other girls.
While Sara draws friends through stories and kindness, Lavinia resents the attention she receives. When Sara's circumstances change and she must work at the school, Lavinia takes pleasure in her troubles.
Lavinia Herbert and the others in the story
Lavinia's relationship with Sara is marked by sneering rather than the loyalty shown by Sara's friends. She mocks Sara during a time when the younger girl faces hunger, cold and constant work.
At one point, Sara is so hungry and wet that she nearly strikes out at Lavinia. Sara stops herself by remembering her determination to behave like a princess, whatever she wears or suffers.
