Over dit boek
A woman who cannot sing steps onto a Paris stage—and men with fortunes cannot look away.
In Émile Zola’s Nana, a young actress from the Paris slums wants comfort, luxury and freedom from poverty. She has beauty, little talent and no plan. Yet a crowded theatre opens the way to rich admirers, fine rooms and a place at the heart of a society eager to be dazzled.
Among the men drawn to her are Steiner, a banker willing to spend heavily, and Count Muffat, a devout court official caught in desire he cannot control. As Nana’s world expands, Zola looks beneath its glitter. Money, status and judgment are at stake, and the men who pursue her help create the power she holds.

A whole city waits for one name
The novel opens in the Théâtre des Variétés, where the first night of Blonde Venus is about to begin. The journalist Fauchery waits with his young cousin La Faloise, fresh from the provinces. Fauchery is tired of hearing the name Nana from every side, and he admits he has never seen her.
The director, Bordenave, runs his house like a market stall. He admits that Nana cannot sing or act. Her gift, he insists, is something else. Around them the crowd gathers, the banker Steiner, Count de Vandeuvres, the courtesans and the young dandy Daguenet. A boy shouts her name at a poster, and respectable gentlemen start to repeat it.

What is Nana by Émile Zola about?
It follows a young woman from the Paris slums who becomes a famous actress and courtesan under the Second Empire. It shows how her beauty and charm draw in rich men, and how a whole society pays for her.
Is Nana part of a series?
Yes. Nana is the ninth novel in Zola's Rougon-Macquart cycle, twenty novels that follow one family through the Second Empire. Nana is a granddaughter in that family, but you can read her book on its own.
What does the golden fly mean in Nana?
The Golden Fly is the title of an article by Fauchery. It compares Nana to a bright insect born in filth that poisons men simply by settling on them, and it gives the book a lasting image of her.
