On a lonely Transvaal farm, love takes root while a powerful neighbour and a divided country threaten the household.
In H. Rider Haggard’s Jess, John Niel is a quiet former soldier who farms with Silas Croft at Mooifontein. Croft’s nieces, Jess and Bessie, share their home. Jess is shy and deeply loyal; Bessie is brighter and more open. As Niel falls in love with one sister, the farm’s quiet life faces a growing threat.
Frank Muller, a wealthy Boer neighbour, is used to getting his way. His interest in the sisters brings menace close to home. Beyond the farm, resentment of British rule pushes the Transvaal toward war. Niel’s devotion to the sisters and his older partner comes under pressure, while Croft hopes to preserve peace in a land pulled apart by divided loyalties.

A fight with an ostrich starts the story
John Niel rides into the Transvaal at the end of a burning day, tired, dusty and thirty-four. He has served fourteen years in the army, and he is heading for Mooifontein, the farm of old Silas Croft.
On the last stretch of road he sees a pony racing over a rise with a huge ostrich behind it. The bird kicks the pony down and rolls over the girl who rode it. John leaps off his horse, takes a hide whip to the bird, and is kicked head over heels. Then a pair of white arms clasps the ostrich's legs from behind. The girl, Bessie Croft, cries out that he must break its neck while she holds it. He does.

What is Jess by H. Rider Haggard about?
It follows Captain John Niel, who joins a Transvaal farm run by Silas Croft and meets two sisters, Bessie and Jess. Their love triangle plays out during the First Boer War, with a dangerous neighbour and a besieged town.
Is Jess a true story?
It is a novel, but it is set in real events. The First Boer War of 1880 and 1881, the Bronker's Spruit ambush and the siege of Pretoria all happened, and Haggard knew the region from living there.
Who is Frank Muller in Jess?
Muller is a rich, handsome landowner, half Boer and half English, who wants to marry Bessie and hates John. He is the book's main villain, ambitious for power, and strangely haunted by superstition.
