What drew people to a secret festival that promised a better fate after death?
In The Eleusinian Mysteries and Rites, Dudley Wright gathers ancient accounts of a religious festival at Eleusis, near Athens. At its heart stands the myth of Demeter, goddess of grain, and her lost daughter Persephone. Their story gives readers a way into rites shaped by grief and hopes about death.
Wright follows the path of initiation, from the springtime Lesser Mysteries to the long procession from Athens and the great hall called the Telesterion. There, a priest known as the hierophant leads the secret ceremony. This short study asks what draws initiates to these rites and what they hope to gain.

A lost daughter explains the seasons and the rites
The book opens with the legend that the whole festival acts out. Persephone is gathering flowers in a meadow when Pluto, lord of the dead, bursts up through the earth in a golden chariot and carries her below. Her mother Demeter arrives too late to see anything.
For nine days and nights Demeter wanders with a torch, until the sun god Helios tells her who took the girl. Furious with Zeus, she goes down among mortals disguised as an old woman. At Eleusis the king Keleos and his wife Metanira welcome her. When Metanira catches her hiding their baby son in the fire to make him immortal, the goddess shows who she is. Demeter makes the earth barren for a full year, until Zeus sends Hermes to Pluto, who agrees to let Persephone go.

What were the Eleusinian Mysteries?
They were the secret religious rites held every year at Eleusis, near Athens, in honor of Demeter and Persephone. Initiates took part in purification, processions and a night ceremony, and were promised a happier life after death.
Why was Persephone's pomegranate seed so important?
By eating pomegranate seeds in the underworld, Persephone bound herself to Pluto. She therefore spends four months of each year below and eight with her mother, which explains the seasons and the myth behind the rites.
What is a hierophant?
The hierophant was the chief priest of the Mysteries, whose title means revealer of sacred things. He came from the Eumolpides family, held office for life, showed the sacred objects, and gave up his personal name when he took office.
