Over dit boek
A hidden manuscript, a Himalayan monastery, and a claim about Jesus: what happens when a bold story outruns the evidence?
In The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ, Russian traveler Nicolas Notovitch describes a journey through Kashmir and Ladakh. He says a broken leg brings him to the Buddhist monastery at Hemis, where he encounters a hidden manuscript. Its subject is Issa, whom the account identifies as Jesus, and the years the four Gospels leave blank.
The book's second half presents the Life of Saint Issa in short numbered verses. According to this account, Issa studies in India and the Himalayas before teaching in Palestine. But scholars who investigate Notovitch's claims conclude that the manuscript never existed and the story is a fabrication. Read it as a religious controversy, not reliable evidence about Jesus.

A traveler hears of a hidden life
Notovitch opens with a preface about his travels after the Turkish War of 1877 and 1878. He crosses the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Persia, and in 1887 he reaches India, a country that has drawn him since childhood. He turns toward Kashmir, meaning to go on to Ladak and then home to Russia.
Then comes the key claim. At a Buddhist convent, a chief lama tells him that the archives of Lhassa hold very old memoirs about Jesus Christ, and that certain great monasteries keep copies. Notovitch decides to put off his return. Whatever the cost, he will find the copies or go to Lhassa itself. He admits that at Himis he hid his real purpose from the authorities.

What is The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ about?
It combines a travel narrative through Kashmir and Ladak with a set of verses called the Life of Saint Issa. Notovitch says these verses describe Jesus's missing years in India and Nepal, and he adds a commentary comparing them with the Gospels.
Who is Issa in the book?
Issa is the name the Tibetan lamas give to Jesus in Notovitch's account. The verses show him leaving Israel at thirteen, studying in India and Nepal, preaching against idols and caste, then returning to Judea and facing Pilate.
Is The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ a true story?
Scholars treat it as a forgery. Notovitch published it in the 1890s, claiming he copied a manuscript at Himis. Later visitors found no sign of the text, and the monastery's abbot reportedly denied it existed.
