What does loyalty cost when the man who outshines you is your own brother?
In Brothers, Horace Annesley Vachell turns to the bond between two brothers and the strain of unequal standing. Family ties hold them close, while ambition pulls them apart. At the heart of this Victorian tale lies a painful question: how do you live beside someone who always seems to shine brighter?
Their world gives weight to class, career and reputation. A family name carries hopes as well as duties, and personal ambition reaches beyond the wish for money. Vachell’s domestic and social novel explores what happens when loyalty to a brother meets the desire to be valued in your own right.

A small girl chooses the stammering boy
The book opens on an October afternoon at The Whim, a house the retired Admiral Kirtling built on a windy hill near Westchester. He has taken in his orphaned niece Betty, and the neighbors have come to meet her.
Mark Samphire, seven years old, stands beside his mother, dreading the moment someone speaks to him. His brother Archie, eighteen months older, is pink, golden and at ease in a new sailor suit. Mark's only comfort is his friend Jim Corrance, with whom he seldom stammers.

What is Brothers by Horace Annesley Vachell about?
It follows the stammering, gifted Mark Samphire and his handsome, lucky brother Archibald from Harrow to adult life. Both love Betty Kirtling, and the story asks what loyalty, ambition and envy cost two brothers over thirty years.
Who is Betty Kirtling in Brothers?
Betty is the orphaned niece of Admiral Kirtling. She is lively, beautiful and torn between pleasure and goodness. As a child she chooses Mark, and as a woman she must decide between him and his brother.
Is Brothers based on a true story?
The author's prefatory note says the brothers were drawn from real people and that a secret about a famous churchman's early career lies behind the story, though it is told as fiction with names changed.
